About
6th Dan, Senior Instructor SHOTO
North London Karate Club

I started training in 1985 under Sensei Mick Randall at both the Winchmore Hill and Sobell Centre Dojos. I have trained and taught regularly ever since that time under Sensei Randall, although chronic back arthritis has limited my time in the dojo for many years. I now concentrate upon the Katas, which as a traditional Shotokan enthusiast has always been my preference anyway. I was previously both the Secretary and Dojo Captain at the North London Karate Club (which had moved from the Sobell Centre).

I wrote much of the original SHOTO Guide to Etiquette and am keen to continue to promote Funakoshi’s Five Main Precepts of the Dojo Kun.

I started karate as a beginner in 1985 at Sobell Centre, Islington and I have trained consistently under the guidance of Sensei Randall, Chief Instructor SHOTO. My role now as Senior Instructor gives me the great honour of encouraging new students into karate, progressing established students and passing on the traditional teaching that I have had the good fortune to benefit from.

I also trained in Wing Chun Kung Fu for two and a half years.

I began training in Shotokan Karate at the tail end of 1995 at Hornsey School for Girls Dojo in Inderwick Road, Crouch End London, under the tutelage of Sensei Mick Randall; my early training was punctuated by bouts of illness.

I began training because I had simply wanted to get a black belt in a martial arts figuring I would stop once this was achieved. Bruce Lee and the series Kung Fu played a part too. I stuck with it because there was always something else to learn and my health improved.

I enjoy helping people learn new things, learning new things myself, the levelling effect of the gi and the slightest chance to practice my “Hollywood” kicks.
